Girls Build LA
  • Girls Build LA in 2015-2016 held three awesome events.

Our first event was a Health Fair on March 12, 2016 in the quad of the STEM campus. Health Care providers from the AIDS Health Foundation, HOSA, and the Youth Policy Institute, as well as students from STEM's medical pathway, provided information about nutrition, health & wellness, and health care options for students and families. We had over 100 people at the event, took blood pressure of almost one hundred people, provided HIV tests to 40, and gave away over $250 in prizes!

On April 12, we held a workshop on applying to college, as a traditional student or as an undocumented student. We had college application information, guest speakers including college access aides and undocumented students who've gone through the process, and $300 in scholarships!

On May 9, we had our most successful event: a Mental Wellness and Healthy Relationship Fair. We helped students learn about mental issues, how to deal with stress, and how to address unhealthy patterns in relationships. Students had authentic, meaningful conversations with each other as well as Kaiser professionals and STEM counselors, and collected buttons from various booths.

The Expo on May 14 gathered Girls Build LA from all over Los Angeles to display their work for the year and reflect.

The 2016-2017 school year is focused on making sure girls are academically, emotionally, physically, and mentally ready for college. We are planning the following events:

November 17 is the Speaking Out event at the Punkin Chunkin Potluck

December 7 is the Health Fair from 5-7 in the Quad.

January will hold our Social Media Event.

February will hold an event about Healthy Relationships.

March will have an event about Mental Wellness.

April or May will have an event about getting ready for College.
